Korean Fintech Giant KSNeT Signs MOU to Bring Solana Pay to 330,000 Merchants
KSNeT, which processes over $4B a month across 330,000+ merchants, is piloting a won-denominated Solana Pay rollout alongside x402-based AI micropayments — the latest in a string of Solana tie-ups with Korean financial institutions.
Solana's Korea strategy just picked up another major distribution partner.
KSNeT — a Korean payment and settlement company handling more than $4 billion in transactions a month across over 330,000 merchants — has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Solana Foundation covering two proof-of-concept projects.
PoC 1: Solana Pay, adapted for Korea
The first workstream adapts the Solana Pay specification to Korea's domestic payment environment, plugging directly into KSNeT's existing online and offline merchant network. The integration is built around two constraints Korean regulators care about most: anti-money-laundering compliance, and tying digital-asset settlement to the won to minimize exchange-rate exposure for merchants who don't want crypto-price risk on their day-to-day sales.
PoC 2: x402 for AI-driven micropayments
The second, more experimental track explores the x402 protocol — a standard designed to let AI agents make autonomous payments without traditional authentication flows, opening the door to transactions as small as a single won. It's a bet on machine-to-machine commerce becoming a real payment category, not just a research curiosity.
Part of a bigger pattern
This MOU doesn't stand alone. It follows a run of recent Solana partnerships with Korean financial players — Shinhan Card, Toss Bank, and KG Group among them — that together read as a deliberate push to make Solana the settlement layer of choice for Korea's payments industry specifically, rather than a general-purpose bet. Worth noting: the article's own reporting flags that x402 adoption on Solana has recently cooled relative to competing chains like Base, so this PoC is as much about Solana re-asserting itself in that specific race as it is about KSNeT's merchant network.
Signal take: Merchant count is the headline number, but the real signal is regulatory-shaped design — won-denominated settlement and AML-first integration suggest Solana ecosystem teams are building for Korean compliance requirements specifically, not retrofitting a generic crypto-payments product. That's a more durable strategy than volume alone, even if this MOU (like most) still has to survive the PoC-to-production gap.
