MoonPay's PayBox Launch Went Viral After Free $USDC Rewards Drew Thousands of New Users
A surprise USDC giveaway turned MoonPay's new AI-driven wallet into one of crypto's most viral marketing moments in recent memory, pulling in roughly 35,000 new X followers in a single day.
MoonPay just proved that a well-timed giveaway still beats any marketing budget.
The payments company launched PayBox on July 30 — a non-custodial AI wallet that lets users transact in crypto by simply chatting with ChatGPT or Claude in natural language. The launch itself would have been notable on its own, but a surprise USDC faucet is what actually sent it viral.
The reward campaign
PayBox handed out variable USDC rewards — anywhere from a few dollars up to $1,000 per user — to anyone who created an account, connected it to an AI platform, set up a wallet, linked their X account, and claimed the reward. The response was immediate enough that MoonPay temporarily paused the program, promising more surprises to come. In the span of a single day, the campaign drove roughly 35,000 new followers to MoonPay's X account.
How it actually works
Under the hood, PayBox uses multi-party computation and trusted execution environments to keep private keys secured — critically, the AI agent itself never has access to the complete key material, only the ability to request signed actions within whatever boundaries the user sets. Users choose between two permission modes: "Always Ask," which requires a passkey approval for every transaction, and "Autonomous," which lets the AI operate independently within predefined limits. The wallet supports Solana alongside Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, and Polygon.
Signal take: Giveaways are a blunt instrument, but this one worked because it was attached to a genuinely new interaction model — conversational, AI-driven wallet control — rather than just being a follower-farming stunt bolted onto an existing product. The real test is retention: whether the ~35K new followers and however many funded wallets stick around once the free USDC stops flowing, or whether this was just a very effective one-day spike.
