Regulated exchange and self-custodial wallet built for Solana-native trading.
Backpack is a crypto company led by Armani Ferrante, the creator of Anchor (the most widely used framework for building Solana programs) and a former Apple software engineer. It runs two core products: Backpack Exchange, a regulated global trading platform, and Backpack Wallet, a self-custodial multichain wallet. The wallet company was incorporated in April 2022 and the exchange in March 2023, after the team lost 88% of its corporate treasury in the November 2022 FTX collapse and rebuilt with compliance and transparency at the centre of the business.
Backpack Exchange offers spot and derivatives trading, including perpetual futures, and has added grid trading bots and a unified prediction-market portfolio. In June 2026 it opened Backpack Securities in public beta, letting users trade real U.S. stocks and ETFs alongside crypto and perpetuals, together with tokenized securities that convert 1:1 between a regulated security entitlement and a self-custodied on-chain token. By February 2026 the exchange had processed more than $400B in cumulative trading volume across 575M+ transactions, serving users in 150+ countries.
Regulation is central to Backpack's strategy. In 2025 it acquired FTX EU (Trek Labs Europe Ltd.), gaining a MiFID II licence regulated by Cyprus's CySEC to offer crypto and perpetual futures across Europe, and returned funds to roughly 110,000 former FTX EU clients. The leadership team includes former CFTC Commissioner and Acting Chairman Mark Wetjen as President of Backpack US, CTO Thomas Linton, CCO Can Sun and COO Nathan Smith, a former Coinbase technical lead.
Backpack Wallet lets users buy, hold, sell and transfer crypto from a single self-custodial app, with built-in swaps, staking and hardware wallet support across Solana and other networks.
The team also created Mad Lads, one of Solana's best-known NFT collections (9,000 Lads and 1,000 Lassies), launched in April 2023. In March 2026 Backpack launched its native BP token, distributing 25% of the total supply to the community at the token generation event.
